Basic Skills for Living
is a community outreach project of
Professional Home Economists who are members of the Winnipeg
Branch of the Manitoba Association of Home Economists (MAHE). This project is coordinated by a volunteer steering
committee.
The
purpose of the
Basic Skills for Living
project is for learners’ to:
- Increase
proficiency in literacy so that they are better able to
read, write and understand vocabulary related to their home,
workplace and community.
- Develop
daily living skills so that they may increase independence in their lives, and
- Build
self-esteem and improve quality of life.
This project has a long and
distinguished history.
Basic Skills for Living
resources were first developed in the 1970’s with a grant
from Health and Welfare Canada in which printed resources
called “Basis
Living Skills” were
developed. Workshops for educators were presented across
Canada.
As time past, the demand for life skill resources
continued but literacy issues had an increasing focus in the
minds of many adult educators. As a result of a needs
assessment, funded by Manitoba Family Services, web-based
literacy resources were developed and this website evolved.
We are pleased to provide these resources free for
downloading to educators.
As well, there are fact sheets
for consumers and learners to use. We thank the National
Literacy Secretariat, Human Resources Development Canada for
their financial support for this website. |
